In 1918, World War I ended. In the eyes of the Allies – the United Kingdom, France, Italy and Greece – the Ottoman Empire lost the war. So, on the thirtieth of October, the Allies and the Ottoman Empire signed the Armistice of Mundros. When the Allies started to occupy some cities in Anatolia, Atatürk decided to travel there and start the War of Independence. So, he left Istanbul on the sixteenth of May. After a three- day trip by ship, he arrived in Samsun on the nineteenth of May, 1919. This is how the War of Independence started.
